Basket Weaving Classes

Conducted by Guest Artisan Debbi Zvanut
May 30, 2009

Guest artisan Debbi Zvanut conducted the first set of classes at LRAC this season, pulling a double-header, so to speak, with a Market Basket Class in the morning, followed by a Melon Basket Class in the afternoon.

Debbi sets up a table full of materials for class participants. With the nice weather, a few tents on the lawn were the perfect setting for the classes.

Under Debbi's guidance, students work the reeds over and under, and a basket begins to take shape.

Another student navigates through the puzzle of reeds and begins to build up the sides of her market basket.

The market basket's shape can be clearly seen at this stage, as a student cuts a length of reed in the background.

In the afternoon class, a melon basket was the goal, using a far different shape, as well as a thinner width of reed, and a few variations on weaving techniques.

Our intrepid photographer was a participant in the melon-basket class, so, for obvious reasons, he wasn't able to capture the group at work because he was busy working too. But, to demonstrate the students' success in the afternoon session, here is Albert's basket. Thanks Albert! It looks as though you had a great time! And many thanks to Debbi for providing such a a great set of classes!
